What to visit
In the past, the country was called Oltrerino (Otarìn in the local dialect): in fact its border with the town of Santo Stefano was marked by the river Rin (comelicana word of Celtic origin meaning "stream"). The name of the town was then San Pietro until 1868; 1868-1957 was San Pietro Cadore. In 1869 the village of Valle was destroyed by fire.
Palazzo Poli-De Pol
Today is the official seat of the municipality of San Pietro di Cadore, with offices, the library and the municipal archives. This building, considered one of the most beautiful villas of Cadore, was commissioned in 1665 by the Poli family, powerful lineage of notaries who was in the bond market. The impressive capital, accumulated with these activities, allowed them to buy entry into Venetian nobility in 1663 by pouring the Serenissima over 100,000 ducats. Shortly after he began the construction of the building, which refers to characteristics of Venetian villas: it is the most successful transplant in Cadore architecture noble plain. The facade of the building is attributed to Baldassarre Longhena. A beautiful fresco cycle, related to Girolamo Pellegrini, is present in three rooms on the main floor. Also refined the interior wooden gallery. The building was sold in 1813 to the family De Pol, who kept it until 1930, when the City of St. Peter bought it, turning it into the town hall.
Palazzo Cesco
the elegant eighteenth-century frescoed villa in the village of Sea, belonged to the family Cesco, it is now privately owned and is therefore not accessible to the public. Interesting outside a sundial for italic hours, decorated with the image of death wielding his scythe.
Chiesa di S. Pietro Apostolo
The church of San Pietro is the parish since 1857, after the separation from Santo Stefano: the building is of Gothic style, built in sec. XIII and enlarged in '700. It has a blade with Ss. Paul, Peter and Simone, attributed to Marco Vecellio.
Museo Etnografico Casa Angiul Sai
Situated in the hamlet of Costalta in one of the most charming historical buildings, a rare example of ancient dwelling, the house-museum is dedicated to architecture rural mountain. On three floors, it is divided into two parts: the house and rooms in rural destination. The museum, as well as witness the traditional way of life of the valley placing of special itineraries, also houses temporary exhibitions (sculpture, crafts, photography).
La miniera di Salafossa
SR 355 along the river Piave near the hamlet of Presenaio resort of Salafossa was carried out from 1959 to 1986 mining activity, with extraction of zinc (a quarter of Italian) and lead. Among the largest deposits in the Alps, the mine in his term of office has employed about 250 people, representing a major source of income for the Comelico Inferiore. Its facilities - example of modern mining technology, today abandoned, mainly held in the gallery: the mine Salafossa is indeed a remarkable example of industrial underground. The first evidence of exploitation of the mine, however, reported much further back, to 1544. The site, in use, can be visited by prior contact the Tourist Office in Santo Stefano di Cadore.
